CHALK LIFTS WOMEN’S HOOPS TO 10TH STRAIGHT GNAC WIN
BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Jen Chalk (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored 22 points to lead the Emmanuel College women’s basketball team past Mount Ida College, 91-72, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the Andy Yosinoff Court. The Saints improve to 16-6 overall and 12-1 in the GNAC while the loss drops the Mustangs to 5-16 and 1-11 in conference play.
BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Jen Chalk (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored 22 points to lead the Emmanuel College women's basketball team past Mount Ida College, 91-72, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the Andy Yosinoff Court. The Saints improve to 16-6 overall and 12-1 in the GNAC while the loss drops the Mustangs to 5-16 and 1-11 in conference play.
EC came out of the gates on fire racing out to a 10-2 lead following a layup by sophomore point guard Olivia Dalphonse (Buxton, Maine). The Saints led by as many as 13 in the quarter (20-7) and carried a 24-12 lead into the second frame behind strong defensive pressure.
Emmanuel continued the defensive intensity in the second quarter and extended the lead to 20 points on a layup by Chalk to make it 43-23 with less than five minutes remaining in the half. Mount Ida closed the quarter strong, cutting the hosts lead to 52-36 at the break.
Chalk led all scorers at the break with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
The Mustangs opened the second half on a 4-0 run to make it a 12 points game at 52-40 before senior guard Olivia Marks (Canterbury, Conn.) got the Saints in the third quarter scoring column with a jumper in transition to make it 54-40. Mount Ida continued to battle and a layup by senior center Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) cut the EC lead to 10 points (54-44) with seven minutes left in the quarter and minutes later, Martinez and the Mustangs got the game back to single digits at 59-51 following a pair of free throws. Over the final four minutes of the quarter, Emmanuel organized a 14-6 run to regain control of the action and head into the final quarter leading 73-57.
The lead was too much for the Mustangs to overcome in the fourth as Emmanuel cruised to their 10th consecutive GNAC victory for a 91-72 final.
Senior guard Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) paced the Mustangs with a team-high 22 points while Martinez ended with 14 points.
Junior Alexis Ezell (Acworth, Ga.), sophomore Madison McLaughlin (Westerly, R.I.) and junior Alisha Fox (National Park, N.J.), all enjoyed strong performances complimentary to Chalk's afternoon scoring 11, 11 and 10, respectively.
The Saints return to action on Tuesday, February 7 for a key GNAC showdown on the road at Saint Joseph's College (ME) at 7:00 PM. Mount Ida is back the same night when they play host to University of Saint Joseph (CT) at 5:00 PM.
