Newton, Mass. – Mount Ida College led for most of the first half, and trailed by just one point at halftime, but eventually fell short in their quest for their first win over Emmanuel College, as the Saints outscored the Mustangs 43-21 in the second half en route to an 84-61 victory in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball on Tuesday night at Mount Ida Athletic Center.
The Mustangs drop to 3-10 overall, 0-3 in conference play while the Saints improve to 7-5 overall with a GNAC record of 3-1.
Emmanuel Senior Forward Jen Chalk (Horseheads, N.Y.) posted a double-double and led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Chalk was also joined by Christine Miller (Manchester, Maine) a sophomore forward who contributed a career-high 15 points, along with Alisha Fox (National Park, N.J.) who added 11 more for the Saints.
Mount Ida was led in scoring by Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) and Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) who each netted 15 points. Martinez also anchored the defensive end with a game high 12 rebounds for the Mustangs for her fifth double-double of the season.
With an intense back and forth battle between both sides, each team refused to let the other separate for more than 6 points the entire first half. With balanced scoring for the Mustangs in the first quarter, Jesse opened up the second quarter with a layup and jumper to try and distance the home team, but was quickly countered by Miller who hit two free throws then followed two possessions later with a three pointer which tied the game at 24.
A three point shot by Ryan Maynard (Bowie, Md.) at the buzzer gave the Saints a one point edge over the Mustangs going into halftime.
The second half started just like the first when Maddie McLaughlin (Westerly, R.I.) opened it up with a quick 4 points which was matched right away by Imani Bumpus (West Hartford, Conn.) who hit an important three to keep the mustangs within two.
Emmanuel College went on a 13-1 run towards the end of the third quarter and never looked back from there. The Mustangs failed to get the lead back down to double digits from then on.
Turnovers were costly heading into the later stages of the game for Mount Ida who compiled 17 in the second half alone. Emmanuel outscored Mount Ida in the second half by a margin of 22 points.
The Mustangs return to conference play on January 12th as they host Saint Joseph's Maine in Mount Ida College Athletic Center at 7:00 PM.
Emmanuel also returns to GNAC play on the 12th when they host Lasell College in Jean Yawkey Center at the same time.
