MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CRUISES PAST MOUNT IDA, 3-0

BOSTON, Mass. - Junior setter Nick Updike recorded a game-high 11 kills and 17 assists to power the Emmanuel College men's volleyball past Mount Ida College, 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-14), Tuesday evening at the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium on the campus of Emmanuel College in Boston, Mass. With the victory, the Saints who received nine votes in the most recent AVCA poll improve to 8-9 overall and 6-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action while the loss drops the Mustangs to 1-14 and 0-5 in the GNAC.
The Saints came out strong in the opening set, slamming home 13 kills while hitting .522 from the floor en route to a 25-9 win. Updike led the way in the first set, putting down five kills on eight attempts while also notching four digs.
In set two, Emmanuel continued to power their way past the Mustangs with an aggressive offense that again collected 13 kills while hitting .526 from the floor. Senior middle hitter Alexander Petty (Wayland, Mass.) was perfect in the set, collecting four kills on four swings while Updike chipped in with four more winners in the 25-8 route.
EC completed the sweep with a 25-14 win in set three to take the match, 3-0. The Saints did not make one hitting error in the final frame, swinging for a .562 attacking percentage (9-0-16) while also rattling off four aces. The Mustangs enjoyed their most productive set as well, smashing down eight kills in the set behind four from junior outside hitter Spencer Hastings (Orlando, Fla.).
Updike finished the match hitting .733 from the field (11-0-17) to go along with 17 helpers, five digs and a match-high four aces. Petty chipped in with five kills and an .833 (5-0-6) attacking percentage while senior middle hitter Tom McCaffrey (Massapequa, N.Y.) also recorded five kills in the win. Hastings led the way for Mount Ida, producing seven kills while hitting .357 on the match (7-2-14) while senior setter Franklin McCaffrey (East Greenwich, R.I.) chipped in with three kills, a .333 hitting percentage (3-0-9) and a team-best 12 assists.
Emmanuel will return to action on Thursday evening when they head down to New Haven, Conn. to face Albertus Magnus in another GNAC tilt scheduled for 7:00 PM while the Mustangs host Johnson & Wales the same evening at 7:00 PM.
