#11 EMMANUEL STRETCHES STREAK WITH 3-0 WIN AT EMERSON
March 16, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Men's Volleyball Team showed the Emerson College crowd why the Saints are ranked \#11 in the country in Division III with a 30-23, 30-19, 30-20 sweep at Emerson's Brown & Plofker Gym. The victory stretches Emmanuel's current win streak to seven matches, as the record-setting squad now stands at 22-7 on the season and 10-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. The Lions dropped to 5-11 on the season and 4-7 in the league with the loss.
The Saints managed to take an early lead in each set of Tuesday night's cross-town match and the visitors gradually extended the margin throughout the remainder of each game. Emerson was never able to put together an extended run in any of the three games as the hitting prowess of the Saints proved too much for the Lions' defense to handle.
Bay Scoggin '10 (Dallas, Texas) had a strong night for Emerson with seven kills in 10 attempts and 5 total blocks. Junior outside hitter Curtis Abram '11 (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), the National American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week last week, led Emmanuel with 9 kills in 9 swings during the first two games. Classmate Thomas McCaffrey (Massapequa, N.Y.) hit .500 with 7 kills in 10 attempts, while Tyson Rietz (Granite Bay, Calif.) added 5 kills and a team-high 8 digs for the Saints. Junior middle Cam Todd (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied 6 blocks to lead the Emmanuel defense at the net, while Keoni Rabaino (Tucson, Ariz.) notched 6 kills for the victors. Setters Sean O'Connor (Hamstead, N.H.) and Nick Updike combined to dish out 38 assists in the win.
Emerson will host a non-conference tri-match at home on Saturday with Regis College and Daniel Webster College beginning at 9:00am. Emmanuel will play at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Thursday evening in a non-conference Colleges of the Fenway rivalry beginning at 7pm.
