SUCCESSFUL FAMILY WEEKEND FOR MEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM

BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Saints took three-straight sets from the visiting Lynx of Lesley University in the tail-end of a tri-match played in the Jean Yawkey Center on Sunday afternoon. The 3-0 win (25-8, 25-9, 25-21), taking place on the Men's Volleyball Team's "family weekend," boosted Emmanuel's record to 9-3 overall. Lesley, which picked up its first win of the season earlier in the day, dropped to 1-11 on the season.
Sophomore setter Nick Updike, who recorded his 1,000th career assist in the opening match of the day, put down a kill to give the Saints an early 11-4 lead. A service ace by Zachary Caron (Hope, R.I.) capped a 9-2 run by the Saints, as Emmanuel led, 20-6, in the opening set. Consecutive aces by Updike pushed Emmanuel's lead to 23-7, as the Lynx signaled for a timeout. A serving error by Lelsey ended the set at 25-8, Saints.
Emmanuel charged out to a 9-3 lead in set two, backed by the hitting of Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Cam Todd (Los Angeles, Calif.). An ace by Abram ended a 5-0 Emmanuel-run and the Saints led, 14-3. A solo block by junior outside hitter Michael Mottola (Quincy, Mass.) gave EC an 18-4 lead. A tip by Mike DelSignore (Narragansett, R.I.) pushed the Saints' lead to 20-7 and a kill by Todd ended the set at 25-9.
The Lynx hung around early in set three, but a kill by Keoni Rabaino (Tucson, Ariz.) gave Emmanuel a 9-7 lead. An ace by Caron put the Saints up 14-9. The score stood at 20-12 after a strong swing by Todd. Another kill by Rabaino ended a 3-0 run by the Lynx and EC held a 21-15 advantage. The Lynx manufactured a 5-1 run and brought the spread to 22-20, before the Saints rallied to finish the set on a block by Updike and Todd at 25-21.
Todd led the Saints with 9 kills in 19 swings, finishing with 26 total kills on the day. Abram added 7 kills and a team-high 6 digs. Updike and Tyson Rietz (Granite Bay, Calif.) served off 3 aces apiece and Updike finished with 28 assists in the win for the Saints.
The Saints will return to the court on Wednesday night, when Emmanuel hosts the visiting Lasers of Lasell College in a 7pm start in the Jean Yawkey Center.
