Bio

Adam Martel joined the Emmanuel staff in the Fall of 2010 as the Head Coach of the Emmanuel Men's Volleyball Program. In his first season at the helm, Coach Martel led the Saints to a program-record 28 wins and an unprecedented second round appearance in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) tournament. Six of Martel's players received GNAC All-Conference recognition, including Jake DeLuise being named GNAC's Defensive Player of the Year and Curtis Abram being named the GNAC Player of the Year. In addition to his players' conference achievements, Martel coached Abram to an AVCA All American honor, the first male All-American in the history of Emmanuel College. Martel's 2011 squad also excelled in the classroom, as his Saints ranked eighth in the nation in grade point average.

During the summer of 2011, Martel was invited to coach a professional exposure tour in Bologna, Italy for Bring it Promotions, where he had the opportunity to work with some of the United States' top male volleyball players.

Prior to coaching at Emmanuel, Martel had several other collegiate coaching positions. He served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University at Albany. Before joining the Albany staff, Martel spent three seasons as an Assistant Coach of the Women's Volleyball Team at Boston College. In his role with the Eagles, Martel worked with the setters, outside hitters and serve receive offense. Martel also helped the Eagles bring in a top 30 recruiting class in 2008 and a top 50 recruiting class in 2009. While at BC, Martel handled opponent scouting, game preparation, tape exchange, travel coordination, and was the assistant director of the Eagles' summer volleyball camp programs.

Martel's head coaching experience includes time as the Head Coach at Boston University, where he guided the Terriers to one of the best finishes in the program's history and a national ranking as high as 29th. During Martel's time at the helm of BU's program, the Terriers achieved a 29-9 record and placed two players on All-Tournament teams.

Before his tenure at Boston University, Martel was an Assistant Coach at GNAC rival Suffolk University, where he served as the offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator and helped rebuild the Rams program. While at Suffolk, Martel also coached the 2007 Boys' High School scholastic team to a gold medal in the Bay State Games.

Throughout his coaching career, Martel has been heavily involved with club volleyball, having coached SMASH Volleyball Club's 15's and 18's teams to multiple tournament victories over the course of 2006 and 2007, including a first place finish at the East Coast Championships and Long Island Big Apple tournaments. He also coached for the North Shore Junior's Volleyball Club, where he led their top 18's team to the best finish in club history and for Peninsula Juniors Volleyball Club, where he led their top 18's team to many tournament victories and a ranking as high as 35th in Northern California.

Before moving back to Massachusetts, Martel was the Head Coach at Serra High School in San Mateo, California, where he led their Men's volleyball program to a state tournament appearance in 2006 and coached three players to all-conference recognition. Martel started his coaching career at North Andover High School, where he helped the Knights make three state tournament appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Recognized as one of the nations top recruiters, Martel was invited to speak at Dan Tudor's annual Recruiting Seminar in Nashville, Tennessee. Martel has also been a speaker at various clinics, including the Massachusetts Girl's Volleyball Coaches Association's annual clinic.

In 2008, Martel had the opportunity to work with the USA Olympic Development High Performance program, where he served as a court coach and helped evaluate and train athletes in the USA Olympic team pipeline. Martel has directed and worked many camps and clinics, received his Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory Certification (IMPACT) and is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

In 2011, Martel was elected to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Board of Directors and appointed to the position of chairman of the marketing committee for the Hall of Fame.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Martel is also a Major Gift Officer in the Development and Alumni Relations department at Emmanuel College. A 2005 graduate of Merrimack College, Martel received his degree in Communication and Business Administration.
