Shelley, Guest Nab Offensive, Defensive Player Honors in GNAC Weekly Awards
WINTHROP, Mass. – Saints sophomores Michael Shelley (San Francisco, Calif.) and Trey Guest (Newington, Conn.) produced stellar play over this past week for Emmanuel Men’s Volleyball and have been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Offensive Player and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for the week of games ending on Feb. 18.
WINTHROP, Mass. – Saints sophomores Michael Shelley (San Francisco, Calif.) and Trey Guest (Newington, Conn.) produced stellar play over this past week for Emmanuel Men's Volleyball and have been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Offensive Player and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for the week of games ending on Feb. 18.
Shelley had arguably the best week in his young career, averaging an astonishing 6.00 kills per set while hitting .318 from the floor in two wins for Emmanuel. On Feb. 14, Shelley finished a 3-1 win over Eastern Nazarene with a career-high 27 kills and followed that performance with a GNAC win on Feb. 17 and 15 kills against Regis. The second-year outside hitter tacked on eight service aces between the two matches.
Early in the season, Shelley leads the GNAC in kills per set with 4.71 and service aces per set at 0.65. He also ranks second in total kills with 160 and fourth in hitting percentage at .346. The Offensive Player of the Week nod is Shelley's second of the season after being named on the Jan. 29, 2024 GNAC Report.
Known more for his offense, Guest managed a strong defensive showing in two matches this past week for the Saints, netting him the Defensive Player of the Week award. The Saints right-side hitter averaged 2.14 digs per set this past week, along with one solo block and seven assisted blocks.
Guest finished the Feb. 14 match against Eastern Nazarene with a career-high 12 digs to go along with five total blocks in the Saints 3-1 win.
Despite a strong week defensively, Guest's offense was nothing to overlook after he totaled 17 kills, 2.43 kills per set, and an attack percentage of .286.
The Saints finish up a four-game homestand this week, hosting Fisher on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the last game in the homestand on Friday, Feb. 23 at 8:00 p.m. against No. 17 Misericordia.
