THE LEAD – The Emmanuel Saints finished the night with 41 team kills, a season-high for a three-set match, as the Saints got back into the win column following a straight sets sweep over the Dean Bulldogs on Thursday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opening set, the Saints captured the momentum with the help of two separate runs; a 4-0 run early in the set, followed by six straight points in the middle of the set that included four aces by junior Joshua McDonald (Smithtown, N.Y.) that gave Emmanuel a 15-5 lead. EC finished the set hitting .625 from the floor, including 17 kills on 24 attempts with two errors, as the Saints took the first set 25-10.
- The Saints carried the momentum into the second set with 11 of the opening 14 points to hold an 11-3 edge. EC held that eight-point lead into the middle of the set, but Dean wouldn't fold as they used a 10-2 run, that included three service aces, cutting the deficit to 16-13. Emmanuel steadied themselves and finished the set, 25-19, on a kill by first-year Maximilian Olsen (Barnstable, Mass.).
- In the third, the Saints and Bulldogs traded points in the early stages to an 8-8 tie. EC claimed the next five points of the set to lead 13-8 and managed to hang on to that tight advantage throughout the third. The Bulldogs closed to within a pair on multiple occasions, but EC would eventually finish off the straight sets sweep thanks to a kill from Olsen, winning the third set, 25-20.
