THE LEAD – The Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons hit a season-best .419 from the floor, starting their Spring Break through Boston with a straight sets victory over the Emmanuel Saints on Monday evening in the Saints first game at home in nearly two weeks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opening set, the Saints made the first run, scoring four straight points early in the set to lead 8-6. But the Falcons response was quick and efficient as Concorida Wisconsin went on a 13-2 run, including three aces and five kills as a team, to give the Falcons a 19-10 edge. EC could only close within seven points as a kill by CUW sophomore Spencer Herman (Appleton, Wis.) ended the first set 25-16.
- The Falcons carried that momentum into the second set, scoring 10 of the first 15 points of the set, forcing an Emmanuel timeout. CUW expanded on that lead, going on a 7-2 run after the timeout to lead 17-7. Concordia Wisconsin led by as many as 13 points and finished off the set 25-13 following a kill by senior James Althoff (Kenosha, Wis.), giving the Falcons a 2-0 sets lead.
- CUW continued the pressure in the third, scoring nine of the first dozen points to lead 9-3. The Falcons continued to extend the lead, getting up by as many as nine in the middle of the set. The Saints wouldn't go quietly, embarking on an 10-3 run to cut the deficit to a pair, but the comeback would fall just shy following a CUW kill for first-year Lucas Beres (Germantown, Wis.), as the Falcons took the third set 25-22.
