BROOKLINE, Mass. - Saints senior Erik English (Simi Valley, Calif.) finished with a match-high 13 kills, leading the Emmanuel offense in their straight sets (25-9, 25-21, 25-15) win over the Newbury Nighthawks on Thursday night in non-conference play at Pappas Gymnasium.
English added eight digs and two aces to his line while hitting .409 from the floor. Senior Alex Silva (Jamacia Plain, Mass.) and juniors Max Gottuso (Long Beach, N.Y.) and John Carroll (Massapequa, N.Y.) all finished with six kills. Junior Seamus McDonagh (Long Beach, Calif.) added 35 assists.

The opening set was all Saints thanks to starting with a 9-1 lead in the first 10 points of the match. Emmanuel would add a 6-0 scoring run in the set, hitting a blazing .577 from the field with 15 total team kills in their 25-9 opening set win. English had five kills in the first.
In the second, Saints miscues would hold the set close, with Newbury holding the lead for much of the early going. Four straight Saints points gave them breathing room with a 16-14 lead and from their Emmanuel would hold off the Nighthawks, winning the final three points in a 25-21 set win.
In the final set, Emmanuel again used a big scoring run to grab control, scoring 10 of 12 points to lead 23-11. The Nighthawks fought back with four straight but the hill was too large to climb as a Silva kill and Nighthawks attack error ended the set, in favor of the Saints, 25-15. Emmanuel combined for 16 team kills in the third.
The win lifts Emmanuel to a 2-2 record while the Nighthawks fall to 0-4 with the loss.
Next for Newbury is a Saturday evening match against Johnson & Wales at Pappas Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m. Emmanuel carries on their campaign with a Saturday match at noon at Nichols.
