ENGLISH & McDONAGH TABBED TO GNAC ALL-CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM
BOSTON, Mass. – Emmanuel College junior outside hitter Erik English (Simi Valley, Calif.) and sophomore setter Seamus McDonagh (Long Beach, N.Y.) have been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Volleyball Second Team squad, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore John Carroll (Massapequa, N.Y.) was the Emmanuel representative on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team.
BOSTON, Mass. – Emmanuel College junior outside hitter Erik English (Simi Valley, Calif.) and sophomore setter Seamus McDonagh (Long Beach, N.Y.) have been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Second Team squad, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore John Carroll (Massapequa, N.Y.) was the Emmanuel representative on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team.
The honor marks the second straight season English has been named to the GNAC All-Conference squad earning Third Team honors as a sophomore. He enjoyed a standout junior season leading the GNAC in several offensive categories including kills (364), kills per set (3.28), total attacks (1,049) and total points (417.5). He was the only player in the GNAC to average over 3.0 kills and 2.0 digs per set and finished the regular season ranked second in the league in aces (42) and digs (316). He also was tabbed to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on six separate occasions.
The California native was Emmanuel's go-to offensive threat, collecting 10 or more kills during 19 matches and also registered 18 matches with 10 or more digs. English set the new Emmanuel single-match record for aces with 11 in a 3-0 victory over Lesley on March 25.
During his three years at EC, English has accumulated 855 kills, 379 digs, 128 aces, 65 total blocks and 61 assists.
McDonagh earned All-GNAC honors for the first time in his career with a standout sophomore season ranking second in the GNAC in assists (949) as well as second in assists per set (8.55). He became the seventh player in program history to reach 1,000 career assists and earned GNAC Weekly Honor Roll status during the week of March 12.
The sophomore played in every set for the Saints and was instrumental in the squad's offensive success. His 949 assists rank fifth all-time at Emmanuel for single-season helpers and during the campaign, he posted 13 matches with 30+ assists including two matches with a career-high 50 assists.
Through two seasons, McDonagh has amassed 1,654 assists and currently ranks fifth all-time in program history at Emmanuel.
The Saints wrapped up the 2018 season with a 15-16 overall mark including an 8-6 record in GNAC play to earn the No. 4 seed. Emmanuel posted a thrilling 3-2 victory in the GNAC Quarterfinals over Lasell before falling to the eventual GNAC Champions, Rivier University, in the Semifinals by a 3-1 score.
