Oct. 25, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College men's soccer team has earned the sixth spot in this year's GNAC Men's Soccer Tournament and will play No. 3 seed Norwich this Saturday.
The Saints will make their fourth GNAC Tournament appearance since the program first opened play in 2002, having gone 0-3 in their previous showings. This will also be the first time the squad has made the tournament since 2006, when the team went 8-7-1 in the regular season.
Emmanuel will look to advance past the first-round on Saturday for the first time in team history. Previously, the Saints have lost to Norwich, 3-0 in 2006, Albertus Magnus, 1-0 (on penalty kicks) in 2005 and to Johnson & Wales, 3-0 in 2004.
The Saints are led by sophomore forward Kevin Shirley, who has tallied eight goals and five assists for 21 points. Freshman Allan Parrelli has shown well in his first season, notching five goals and three assists for 13 points.
On the defensive end, junior Kelly Louis-Charles leads the team with 580 minutes played while freshman Kevin Esposito chipped in with 480 minutes on the backline and senior Johnathan Benevides added 449.
The Saints' three goalkeepers (Wilhelm Du Bois, Patrick Froass and Carlos Perez) have all shared time in net, notching 108 saves and four shutouts as a group this season.
In other tournament action, No.1 seed Lasell will host No. 8 seed Johnson & Wales, No. 2 Albertus Magnus will host St. Joe's and No 4 Suffolk will play against No. 5 Emerson.
