AVILA TO HEAD SAINTS MEN'S GOLF PROGRAM
June 24, 2009
Julio Avila will serve as Emmanuel College's Head Men's Golf Coach as the program commences its inaugural season in the fall of 2009. With Avila at the helm, the team will practice and compete at William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Mass. Avila formally coached the Emmanuel Men's Soccer Team. He led the program from its inception in 2002 through the 2008 season. Along with his past experience building a new Division III varsity program and his familiarity with Emmanuel and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, Avila is a superb golfer and coach. Coach Avila and the Emmanuel College Athletic Department are both excited and optimistic about him leading the young program this fall.
Coach Avila currently holds memberships at William J. Devine Golf Course (the Saints' home course) and at Club Campestre La Lima, S.A. Honduras. He has been a member of the Franklin Park Inner Club from 2005 until the present. Avila also spent seven years as a member of the caddie program at La Lima Verde Country Club in Honduras. He is a member of the Massachusetts Golf Association (MGA) and holds a United States Golf Association (USGA) handicap of 7.8.
Coach Avila has faired extremely well in several recent golf tournaments. Topping his list of notable finishes in 2008 were an October win in the Turkey Shoot Out, a second place finish in the Franklin Park Member Tournament, an "A Flight" second place finish in the Boston Open Golf Tournament, and a Top 10 finish in the Golf Channel Amateur Tour in Newport, R.I. Avila also qualified for the Mass Open Links Amateur Tournament in May of 2008 at Brookmeadow Country Club in Canton.
Avila is excited about the opportunity to build a solid varsity golf program for Emmanuel. The Saints will play six matches in their inaugural season, teeing off on September 15th at the Elms College Invitational in Chicoppee, Mass. Emmanuel will host its first-ever match on September 25th vs. Newbury College. The season will wrap up with the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament, which will be held at UMass Dartmouth on October 24th.
