MEN'S SOCCER TEAM FALLS TO RIVIER, 1-0

Nashua, N.H. – Despite being out-shot, 14-3, the Rivier College Men’s Soccer Team dropped Emmanuel, 1-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown. The victory was the second-straight for the Raiders, who upped their record to 3-11 overall and 2-5 in the league. Wednesday night’s win marked the first time this season that the Raiders have won back to back games. The loss dropped Emmanuel to 3-12-1 overall and 1-6-1 in GNAC play. Rivier now sits in a tie with Suffolk University for the 8th spot in the conference standings.
Wednesday night’s contest remained scoreless throughout the first half and fifteen minutes into the second half. Rivier’s senior captain Gustavo Marques (Lowell, Mass.) was able to break past the defense at the 60-minute mark and shoot Rivier’s only shot on goal for the game. The ball found its way to the back of the net to give Riv the 1-0 edge.
From the goal on, the Raiders did their best to play keep away and push Emmanuel deep into their own territory. Although the Saints did have some shots on goal, they primarily came from a great distance with little scoring threat.
Rookie forward Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) provided Emmanuel with several scoring opportunities, taking a team-high three shots on goal. Senior co-captain Byron Glaus (Rumford, Maine) added two shots on goal in the effort for the Saints.
Rivier keeper John Jarvis (Henniker, N.H.) had his hands full as he recorded 8 saves on the night to preserve the shutout for the Raiders. Emmanuel goalkeeper Patrick Froass (Oneida, N.Y.) allowed the one goal and recorded no saves in the defeat.
The Raiders will play next on Saturday, October 24th, as they travel to Norwich University in Vermont for a 3:30 game. Emmanuel will host St. Joseph’s College (Maine) on the same day to finish up their regular season.
