MEN'S SOCCER DROPS 4-0 DECISION TO EMERSON
Oct. 20, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College men's soccer team lost 4-0 to Emerson College on Wednesday evening at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Mass.
The Saints fell to 5-8-3 while the Lions improved to 7-7-1.
Emmanuel began the evening by recognizing the six seniors on the team and thanking them for their dedicated efforts during their career. Johnathan Benevides (Lakeville, Mass.), Carlos Perez (Boca Raton, Fla.), David Somerville (Barre, Vt.), Jesse Tannetta (North Billerica, Mass.), John Hieber (Peabody, Mass.) and Patrick Sheldon (Saco, Maine) were joined by their friends and family on the field prior to the match.
Emerson tried to get on top in the first half, testing Saints' keeper Perez early. However, the senior was up to the task, keeping the play in front of him all the while. Lions' midfielder, Eric Dabdoub (Monterry, Mexico) nearly had the first score of the match, when his one-timer sailed just over the crossbar and out of play.
The Lions found the back of the net with less than 10-minutes remaining in the opening frame, when Dabdoub's crossing pass found junior Cory Walls (Scituate, Mass.), who knocked the ball into the roof of the net to make the score, 1-0. That would be all the scoring for the first half.
The Saints started the second half with strong pressure up front. The Saints almost grabbed the tying goal when junior Jeremy Scanlon (Woburn, Mass.) connected on a pass while sliding to his right, but the ball careened wide of the right post.
Emerson tallied its second goal of the match when senior Jacob Lawrence's shot was saved by Perez, but Walls cleaned up the rebound to notch his second score for the Lions. They managed to grab another 10 minutes later, when Dabdoub again found a teammate, this time freshman Jonny Havers (Williamsport, Pa.), who launched a looping ball that Perez just managed to get his fingers on, but rolled into the bottom corner of the net to make the score, 3-0.
Dave Castano (Long Branch, N.J.) added another tally for the visitors, when his shot from near midfield fell beyond the end-line for Emerson's fourth goal. That would be all the offense for the match, and Emerson would take a 4-0 victory.
Perez finished with five saves in the match. Emerson outshot Emmanuel, 14-4.
The Saints will finish the regular season this Saturday, when they will travel to meet Johnson & Wales at 3:00 p.m.
