MEN'S SOCCER EARNS 2-2 TIE WITH MOUNT IDA
Oct. 16, 2010
On senior day, the Mount Ida College men's soccer team stalemated a 2-2 double overtime tie with visiting Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs are stymied at 1-12-1 with a GNAC record of 1-5-1 while the Saints remain at 5-7-3, 3-2-2 in conference play.
The visitors went ahead in the 30th minute of the first half on a well placed free kick to the back post by Saints freshman Bill Bernier (Epsom, NH/Pembroke Academy) to the head of sophomore Kevin Shirley (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) who deposited the ball into the left corner for the 1-0 advantage.
The Mustangs answered seven minutes later in the 37th minute of play. Mount Ida junior Chris MacKinnon (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) served a well placed ball into the box that ricocheted off a defender to the foot of freshman Tim Gil (Lowell, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech.). With the ball bouncing and unsettled, Gil volleyed a shot into the top left corner knotting the score at 1-1. The score would remain tied heading into the midway point.
The action picked up in the 50th minute of play with the visitors striking again to regain the lead for the second time during the contest. A through ball that split the defense by Bernier to senior Jesse Tannetta (North Billerica, MA/Billerica Memorial) gave a one-on-one with Mustang goalkeeper Steven Enright (South Kingston, RI/Prout). Tannetta poked a shot into the right corner of the net for the 2-1 lead.
Mount Ida had another legitimate chance to score on a well placed through ball from freshman Steve MacDonald (Medford, MA/Arlington Catholic) to freshman Kevin Custodio (Dartmouth, MA/Great New Bedford Voc. Tech.). Although it appeared at first that he was onside, good for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, the linesman raised his flag for a suspect offside call for a missed opportunity.
The hosts answered in the 70th minute of play tying the score for the second time on the day off a well placed ball into the middle of the box by freshman Carlos Rojas (Stamford, CT/Westhill). With two defenders on him, Custodio fought off the defense and hammered a bouncing ball off a volley into the right corner of the net for the 2-2 tie.
Although each squad had numerous opportunities to net a goal for the remainder of the second half, neither converted sending the game into an extra time period. Each team had their chances in both overtimes ending the conference bid in a 2-2 tie.
Mount Ida College goaltender Enright denied three Saints shots during the contest while Emmanuel goalkeeper junior Wilhelm Du Bois (Key Biscayne, FL/Coral Gabler) notched five saves.
The Mustangs visit Johnson & Wales University in East Providence, Rhode Island Wednesday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m. The Saints will host their final game of the regular season next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. against Emerson.
