MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO LASELL, 2-1
Oct. 9, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Lasell College on Saturday afternoon at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Mass.
The Saints moved to 4-7-2 while the Lasers improved to 5-5-1.
Emmanuel and Lasell traded possessions to start the match, with both teams matching up fairly evenly with one another. Two long range efforts by Emmanuel's Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) tested the Lasers' keeper while facing the sun, but the goaltender was up to the task both times, keeping the game locked at 0-0.
Lasell managed to strike first on a bounding ball inside the Emmanuel box that found the back of the net after a flurry of strikes. Ultimately it would be sophomore Adam Luciano (Fairfield, Conn.) who would give the Lasers the first goal of the contest in the 24th minute.
Neither team managed any more scores prior to halftime and the score was set at 1-0 heading into the second period.
The Lasers struck early in the second half to increase their lead to 2-0. Freshman Marcus Lopez's (Barrigada, Guam) shot bounced off of the crossbar and back into play, where teammate Kyle Cronin (Weymouth, Mass.) slotted home the goal for the team's second tally.
The Saints seemed to find their footing after the 50th minute and put up a strong front to equalize the match. They found the edge they were looking for, thanks to a ball put into the attacking box by Shirley that was flicked into the net by sophomore Andres Rocha (West Orange, N.J.) to give the home team a fighting chance.
The two squads fought bravely as the clocked ticked down and one final long pass to freshman Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) looked as if it might fall over the line with less than 10 seconds remaining on the clock, but Parrelli's ball floated just over the crossbar as the game ended.
Saints' keeper, junior Wilhelm Du Bois (Key Biscayne, Fla.) made nine saves in net for the hosts while junior Matt Bruninghaus (Plymouth, Mass.) tallied five stops for the Lasers. Lasell outshot Emmanuel, 15-10.
The Saints will next travel to take on Albertus Magnus College at 3:15 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
