SAINTS DROP 2-0 MATCH AT UMASS DARTMOUTH
Oct. 8, 2009
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s soccer team scored twice in the second half and shut out visiting Emmanuel College, 2-0, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Thursday afternoon. Junior midfielder Jason Couto (Somerset, Mass.) put the Corsairs on the board, breaking a scoreless tie in the 67th minute when he converted a pass from senior forward Matt Correia (Dracut, Mass.) and scored from in front of the net.
Sophomore midfielder Bruno Araguo (Marlborough, Mass.) scored an insurance goal with 9:30 remaining, heading in a cross from junior midfielder Mike Alves (Seekonk, Mass.).
“I was ecstatic when we scored the first goal,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. “Even at that, a 1-0 lead is a scary lead in soccer. Once we got the second one, I knew we could dictate play from that point. We maintained possession and dictated the pace of the game, and we played well for the entire match, although we had a little trouble finishing our chances.”
The Corsairs out shot the Saints, 21-2. Freshman goalkeeper Jon Doucette (Boxford, Mass.) made two saves for UMD and picked up the shut-out. Sophomore goalkeeper Wilhelm Du Bois (Key Biscayne, Fla.) made seven stops for EC.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-2-0 with the victory, while Emmanuel dropped to 2-10-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will visit Keene State Saturday, while the Saints will host Johnson & Wales Saturday.
