FOUR GOALS FROM D'AMATO DRIVE SAINTS PAST WHEELOCK
Oct. 3, 2009
BOSTON, Mass. - Senior captain Dan D'Amato (Huntington, Mass.) had a career day, collecting a hat-trick in the first half and adding a fourth marker in the second period to lead the Emmanuel Men's Soccer Team over neighboring Wheelock College. The Saints topped the Wildcats, 9-1, on a rain-soaked afternoon at Clemente Field in Boston. For Wheelock, William Hall (Hingham, Mass.) provided a spark of offense with his first goal of the season, but it wasn't enough to stop a potent Emmanuel offense as the Wildcats dropped their seventh-straight game. The Saints, who ended an eight game slide, improved to 2-8 on the season with the win.
D'Amato's four goals in the contest set two single-game program records for Emmanuel. His four goals totaling 8 points in the game, topped Chris Clark's single game record of 3 goals and an assist (7 points) recorded on October 12, 2004 in a 9-0 shut-out of Southen Vermont College.
D'Amato broke a scoreless game at the 12:46 mark when sophomore Mathew Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) stole a Wheelock pass at midfield and set D'Amato up for the first score of the game. Three minutes later, the Saints took advantage of another Wildcat miscue when senior captain Byron Glaus (Rumford, Me.) found D'Amato in front of the goal for what proved to be the game-winner. Glaus gave the Saints a three goal advantage only minutes later, when his header from a Johnathan Benevides (Lakeville, Mass.) corner kick snuck past diving Wheelock goalie Victor Kashouh (Providence, R.I.).
Wheelock forward Max Kaim (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) led the Wildcats with four shots on goal, and provided the assist to teammate William Hall mid-way through the first half to cut the Saints' lead to 3-1. However, consecutive goals by the Saints' Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.), Koenemann and D'Amato gave Emmanuel a 6-1 advantage at the break.
Another goal from D'Amato in the second period would give the senior his 8th point of the day. Two more second half goals brought the Saints' tally to nine on the day. Sophomore Jeremy Scanlon (Woburn, Mass.) scored unassisted at 66:33, after assisting on D'Amato's 4th goal of the afternoon. Senior Corey McLean (Lincolnville, Me.) received an assist from junior Kheron Bethel (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) at 84:15 to round out the scoring for the Saints.
Emmanuel outshot Wheelock 31-5, and edged the Wildcats in corner kicks, 8-1. Wheelock goalie Kashouh notched 11 saves on the day, while sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Froass (Oneida, NY) stopped five shots on goal to pick up the win for Emmanuel.
The Wildcats return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Albertus Magnus College for a 2:00 pm showdown, while Emmanuel travels to Mitchell College on Tuesday for a 4pm start.
