MEN'S SOCCER DROPS 4-1 CONTEST TO NORWICH
Oct. 2, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College men's soccer team fell to Norwich University, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Mass.
With the loss, the Saints moved to 4-6-1 while the Cadets improved to 5-5-1.
The Saints opened the scoring less than four minutes into the frame when freshman Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) fired a low shot past the diving Norwich keeper to put Emmanuel up, 1-0. Not to be outdone, the Cadets responded less than ten minutes later when senior Roger Motaze (Cameroon) made a long cross to the back post to find freshman Ryan Campbell (Damascus, Md.) who headed the ball into the back of the net to even the score at one apiece.
Norwich grabbed the lead midway through the half, when Motaze lined up to take a penalty kick for the Cadets following a foul inside the Emmanuel box. Saints keeper Carlos Perez (Boca Raton, Fla.) managed to get a hand to the shot but the momentum of the ball carried it into the back of the net to make the score 2-1.
The visitors found the goal again a few minutes later when freshman Eric Weir (Ipswich, Mass.) took a pass from sophomore Garrett Shufelt (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and knocked it home to give the Cadets a 3-1 lead. That would be all the scoring in the first half.
The two squads continued to play hard into the second half but it was Norwich who would put the game away in the 61st minute when Weir tallied his second goal of the match from the right side of the box to put the Cadets up, 4-1. That would prove to be all the offense for the match and the Saints fell to 2-1-1 in conference play.
Perez tallied three saves for the Saints in the loss while the Cadets' freshman keeper, Alex Toomey (Anchorage, Alaska) saved two shots in the win. The Cadets outshot the Saints, 7-4.
Emmanuel will return to the pitch this Tuesday night, when it will host UMass-Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
