RAMS ROLL TO 4-1 WIN OVER SAINTS
Oct. 1, 2008
SOMERVILLE, MA - The Emmanuel Saints fell to the visiting Rams of Framingham State College by a 4-1 margin in non-conference men's soccer action at Dilboy Stadium. The Saints managed to hold the Rams to just one goal in the first half and tied the contest just two minutes into the second half. Framingham went on a late run and netted three goals in the final thirty minutes en route to the decisive victory.
The Rams were led by the play of senior forward Johnny Goncalves (Framingham, MA), who scored the opening goal on an unassisted strike at 23:01 and then the game-winner mid-way through the second half. The Rams and Saints played fairly evenly for the first half, with Framingham taking a 7-6 shooting edge. Emmanuel's senior keeper Jeffrey Boughton (Chandler, AZ) made three saves in the opening stanza.
After the break, the Saints came out gunning and received a quick score from rookie Ivan Barrera (Millis, MA) with an assist from senior Cameron O'Hala (Bristol, CT) after a corner kick situation at 46:22. Goncalves then struck again at 60:58 to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage. Goncalves' goal would hold up as the game-winner, as Emmanuel could not convert several scoring opportunities down the stretch.
After an eight minute lull, Framingham's sophomore midfielder Jason Silva (Milford, MA) lofted a corner kick into the box that was deflected by Boughton. Junior midfielder Jared Curry (Westboro, MA) found an opening and smashed the rebound past Boughton for the Ram's third goal of the game. Framingham tacked on one more goal when senior forward Derek Pingitore (Auburn, MA) came off the bench and found the back of the net with an assist from Michael Jones (Norwood, MA) in the 89th minute.
Boughton collected 7 saves in his 74 minutes in net for Emmanuel. Rookie keeper Patrick Froass (Oneida, NY) saw his first collegiate action, as he wrapped up the game for the Saints. For Framingham, sophomore Greg Halle (Beverly, MA) picked up the win, as his team improved to 7-1-1 on the season.
