MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO MITCHELL COLLEGE, 2-0
Sept. 29, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College men's soccer team lost an even matchup against Mitchell College, 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Roberto Clemente field in Boston, Mass.
With the loss, the Saints move to 4-5-1 while the Mariners improve to 4-3.
The two teams traded possession back and forth for the early part of the contest. Senior Jaime Serrano (Clinton, Conn.) had the first major scoring opportunity of the game, blasting a right footed shot low to the far corner of the net. Saints senior keeper Carlos Perez (Boca Raton, Fla.) was quick to react and managed to smother the ball with lighting reflexes before it did any damage.
The Mariners struck first against the Saints, with senior Will Frohnhoefer (Syosset, N.Y.) delivering a bouncing ball across the front of the net for teammate James Gleason (Old Lyme, Conn.) to knock into the goal for an early 1-0 advantage to Mitchell. That would be all the scoring for the first half.
The Saints and Mariners continued to play even soccer into the second half, when sophomore Jorden LaPorte (Lisbon, Conn.) helped save a goal for the hosts, standing perfect spot in front of the net to block a sure goal for the Mariners and keep it a one-goal match.
Freshman Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) nearly leveled the score for the Saints, ripping a shot over the diving keeper towards the top of the net. The ball bounced off the crossbar and back into play to keep the Saints down by one.
Emmanuel found its biggest chance of the game when senior Jesse Tannetta (North Billerica, Mass.) was pushed down from behind in the box to earn a penalty kick for the Saints. However, junior Mathew Koenemann's (Montpelier, Vt.) shot sailed wide right and kept the score at 1-0.
Sophomore Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) almost grabbed a late score for the Saints, shooting a long ball that tipped off of the goalie's fingers and ricocheting off the crossbar.
Mitchell added its second score of the game moments later when sophomore Michael Berthiaume (Brooklyn, Conn.) launched a long, looping shot that went just beyond Perez's outstretched hands and into the corner of the net.
Perez tallied four saves for the Saints while junior keeper Kevin Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) notched five for the Mariners.
The Saints will remain at home this week to host Norwich University this Saturday at noon.
