CADETS RUN PAST SAINTS, 5-0
Sept. 26, 2009
NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's soccer team put on a dominating display against Emmanuel College, as the Cadets came away with a 5-0 shutout victory over the Saints on Saturday afternoon at Howard Field. Junior M Roger Motaze and freshman F Mike Ravenelle led the way for the Cadets as each player netted two goals apiece.
Norwich (4-3-1, 2-0-1 GNAC) gained the man advantage in the 11th minute when Emmanuel's David Somerville was sent off with a red card. Motaze scored his third goal of season on the ensuing restart from just outside the penalty area, deflecting it off the wall and into the right-hand side of the net.
Senior M Jake Yaris doubled Norwich's lead when he controlled the ball over a defender, then chipped the ball over Saints' GK Patrick Froass at the 18:35 mark. The goal was Yaris' seventh of the season.
Motaze added his second marker of the game in the 40th minute off a feed from freshman D Joe Longo. Ravenelle scored his first two career goals in the 52nd and 65th minutes to cap the scoring. Senior D Chris Rivet picked up an assist on the first goal, delivering the ball on a corner.
Norwich GKs Charles Maxwell and Sam Armus combined on the shutout for the Cadets, though neither had to register a save. Froass had seven saves for Emmanuel. NU outshot Emmanuel 25-3 in the game. The Cadets held a 7-0 edge on corner kicks.
The Cadets continue their five-game homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 29, when they host in-state rival Castleton State College in a non-conference match. Kickoff from Howard Field is slated for 3:30 p.m. The Saints will return to action on Tuesday night at Emerson College at 7:30pm.
