COLONELS COME FROM BEHIND TO STOP SAINTS
Sept. 23, 2009
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Men's Soccer Team was defeated by Curry College in non-conference action played at Roberto Clemente Field on Wednesday night. Curry overcame a one-goal edge in the early going to take away a 4-1 win. The victory for the Colonels improved the squad to 5-2-1 on the year, while Emmanuel dropped to 1-6 overall.
The Saints stormed out of the gates and scored just 2:58 into the contest. Freshman forward Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) received a feed from classmate Max Hall (Carolina, R.I.) to put Emmanuel on top 1-0. However, Shirley's shot would be Emmanuel's only shot on goal for the remainder of the half. Curry's defense overpowered the young Saints in the first period.
The Colonels tacked on the equalizer at 13:25, when sophomore forward Jesse Fishman (Tarzana, Calif.) scored his first of a pair of goals on the night. Fishman was assisted by senior defender Graham Becker (Sparks Glencoe, Md.) to tie the match a 1-1. The two teams played scoreless for the remainder of the first half and entered the break knotted at 1-all.
Fishman notched the game-winner just eight minutes into the second period. He got an assist from senior midfielder Sam Schwarz (Byfield, Mass.) to go ahead, 2-1. An insurance goal from senior forward Benjamin Radzicki (Sterling, Mass.) with a helper from Fishman would give Curry a 3-1 lead. An Emmanuel foul led to a penality kick situation for Curry in the 79th minute. Becker converted the penalty kick and capped the scoring at 4-1 on the night.
The Colonels out-shot the Saints, 18-4, in the game and tallied 5 corner kick opportunities to just 2 by Emmanuel. Emmanuel keeper Wilhelm Du Bois (Key Biscayne, Fla.) went the distance in net for the Saints and made 10 stops in the effort. Curry's starting keeper Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J.) picked up the win after playing 82:15 for the Colonels. Senior Nicholas Caiazza (Reading, Mass.) came off the bench to relieve Newsome and made one save for Curry.
The Saints are on the road this weekend, returning to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. Emmanuel will travel to Northfield, Vt. to take on the Cadets of Norwich University in a men's and women's soccer double-header on Saturday afternoon.
