PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Graduate student Aidan Bagley scored the only goal of the match at 74:20 to propel the JWU-Providence men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Emmanuel (MA) College Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Bagley's sixth goal of the season lifted the Wildcats record to 5-2-1 on the season (4-1-0 GNAC). Graduate student Jacob Friedman turned aside three shots to move to 5-2-1 on the season as JWU outshot the Saints 13-7.
Bagley's free kick with less than 15 minutes remaining in the match came from outside the box. His shot found its way through a maze of players and into the lower right corner of the net. Bagley led all student-athletes with four shots and was one of seven Wildcats to play all 90 minutes.
The Saints best opportunity to tie came in the 83rd minute with a corner kick finding the foot of junior Pedro Andres Vasquez (Frisco, Texas). A loose ball in the box from six yards out was fired on goal by Vasquez, but a scrambling Friedman was able to get enough on the shot to turn it aside.
Sophomore Maddox Pierce (Meriden, Conn.) made six stops for the Saints, who fall to 1-6-1 (1-5-1 GNAC) this season.
The Saints return to play on Saturday, Sept. 30 with a trip to the Univ. of Saint Joseph (Conn.) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
