THE LEAD – Three first half goals including a pair from sophomore forward Joey Soucy (Attleboro, Mass.) lifted visiting Emmanuel College past Colby-Sawyer College, 5-1, Tuesday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action at Kelsey Field in the regular-season finale for both sides.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Soucy got the Saints out in front in the fourth minute of play with his ninth goal of the year to put EC on top, 1-0, just 3:56 into the match.
- The forward made it 2-0 with his team-leading 10th goal of the campaign on an unassisted marker during the 24th minute to double the lead, marking the second consecutive match he's notched a brace for the Saints.
- Senior Alec Erskine (Coventry, Conn.) got into the scoring mix just 22 seconds later with his eighth goal of the year to bump the lead to 3-0 at the 24:11 mark of the opening half.
- EC held an 8-4 shots advantage at halftime as well as a 4-3 edge in corners.
- The Chargers put up a fight in the early minutes of the second half, cutting the deficit to 3-1 when Finn Husband (Elk Rapids, Mich.) found the back of the net with a nifty assist from Callum Buchanan (Eastbourne, Englad) during the 52nd minute of play.
- The score remaining at 3-1 until Erskine gave Emmanuel some breathing room with his second goal of the match to move the needle to 4-1 with less than 20 minutes to play.
- First year Gabriel Eduarte (Minneapolis, Minn.) added an insurance marker in in the 72nd minute, netting his first collegiate goal to seal the 5-1 road win for the Saints.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- EC keeper Vincent Conelli (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up the win to move to 7-4-5 on the year making three saves over 66+ minutes of action before giving way to first year Maddox Pierce (Meriden, Conn.) who recorded one stop in 23+ minutes of work.
- With his seventh win, Conelli moves into a tie for second for goalkeeper wins in a season with Dan Campagna '07 who posted seven during his senior campaign in 2006.
- Yener Bartolon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) made 11 stops in net for the Chargers to match his season-high.
- The Saints closed out the regular season unbeaten in their last nine matches, holding a 5-0-4 record in that span for the longest unbeaten stretch in program history.
- Today's match was the first time since September 8, 2016 when a pair of Emmanuel teammates (Soucy & Erskine) scored two goals each in the same contest. The last time the feat occurred was in a 12-0 win over Wheelock with two goals each from Henri Morrison, Alex DeSaulnier and Colin O'Donnell in the non-conference win.
- The 5-3-4 mark in GNAC play marks the most points ever (19) in conference standings for an Emmanuel team since the program's inception.
