THE LEAD – An early, first half goal for the Albertus Magnus Falcons made all the difference on Saturday afternoon as the Falcons defeated the Emmanuel Saints 1-0 at Clemente Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Falcons senior Ben Pierce (Meriden, Conn.) was the lone goal scorer on Saturday, benefiting from a loose ball in the Saints penalty area, early in the first half.
- On a breezy afternoon in Boston, a hard-to-control ball near the penalty spot, was flicked along by Falcons first-year Yahya Kardad (Wallingford, Conn.). Pierce found himself in behind the Saints defense and fired a shot over the left hand of graduate student goalie Vincent Conelli (West Hartford, Conn.), giving the Falcons a 1-0 edge.
- The gusty winds of Clemente proved to be tough for either team's efforts to create offense throughout the match until the final 10 minutes featured the Saints offense creating multiple opportunities as the Falcons tried to hold on to their one-goal edge.
- The best of those chances came in the 88th minute with EC first-year Noah Alves (Nassau, Bahamas) settling the ball near the top of the penalty area on a failed AMC clearance. Alves created room, firing a shot toward net that Falcons first-year David Lucero (East Haven, Conn.) saved but spilled right in front of his goal. Sophomore Joey Soucy (Attleboro, Mass.) closed in on the rebound, but a desperate diving save from Lucero kept the Saints off the board.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Pierce's first-half goal is his second of the season, tied three most on the Falcons this season.
- Kardad picked up his second assist of 2022, giving him a pair of helper on the year.
- Lucero finished the match with three saves, none bigger than the two he made in the 88th minute, helping his record to 5-1 (3-0 GNAC) this year.
- Conelli made a pair of stops for Emmanuel, but the loss drops his record to 2-4-2 (0-3-1 GNAC) this season.
