THE LEAD – After trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Emmanuel Saints overcame that two-goal deficit, scoring three times in the second half to defeat the Anna Maria AMCATS 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emmanuel completed the two-goal comeback in the 76th minute off a corner kick. First year RJ Darrell (Wethersfield, Conn.) crossed a dangerous ball in from the left corner as senior Ethan Skinner (Guilford, Conn.) found the back of the net with a header and his second goal of the season.
- The first half was all about the AMCATS tandem of grad student Nick Lawrence (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Hezekiah Adeyeye (Woonsocket, R.I.).
- The Anna Maria duo started off the scoring in the fourth minute on a goal by Lawrence, his second of the season, with the assist from Adeyeye, his second helper of 2021.
- The AMCATS combo quickly struck again, this time in the 24th minute, with Lawrence again finding the back of the net with the assist from Adeyeye, as Anna Maria jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.
- In the second half, the Saints began their comeback thanks to the help of two goals in a span of 1:27 to tie the match.
- Saints senior Robert Danielian (Watertown, Mass.) broke through for Emmanuel in the 63rd minute while senior Kyle Monaghan (Monson, Mass.) scored his team-leading fifth of the season in the 64th minute to tie the match 2-2.
