HOW IT HAPPENED
After finishing regulation tied 2-2, the Leopards and Saints headed for overtime on a rainy Opening Day.
With 2:17 remaining in the first overtime, it was Soucy, the Saints newcomer, that provided the thrilling game-winner.
Wentworth's backline was preparing to clear the ball from inside the penalty area, but high pressure from Soucy forced a turnover at the Leopard penalty spot.
Soucy took a touch forward and struck a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the net, finishing off an overtime victory for Emmanuel.
The Leopards were first on the board, scoring the game's opening goal in the 32nd minute.
Wentworth senior Jomar Martins (Braintree, Mass.) delivered a long throw-in that bounced in the Saints penalty area. After a flick off the back of senior Eddie Smith (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), the ball found freshman Jaedon Costa (North Providence, R.I.), who delivered a right-footed strike from close range, into the top right corner of the net.
Prior to half in the 44th minute, the Saints tied things 1-1 on the first goal of the game by Soucy.
Following a free kick, the ball bounced around the Leopards penalty area, Soucy reacted quickly to the loose ball, and a right-footed shot found the back of the net, tying things just before halftime.
The Saints took a 2-1 edge in the second half on a high-quality finish from senior Kyle Monaghan (Monson, Mass.).
After settling a loose ball at the top right corner of the penalty area, Monaghan curled a right-footed shot into the far corner of the net, giving Emmanuel a one-goal lead.
The lead was erased in the 76th minute by Wentworth senior Kaleb Gebremeskel (Georgetown, Texas), after he finished off a cross sent in from the right-wing by senior John Dauphin (Yorba Linda, Calif.), tying the game 2-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Soucy's two-goal Opening Day performance is a rare feat for the first game of a new season. The last time a Saints player scored twice in a game on Opening Day was on Sept. 5, 2009.
- Monaghan's second half tally marks his sixth career goal for Emmanuel.
- Emmanuel senior Campbell Shealy (Lexington, S.C.) was credited with a pair of assists on the afternoon.
- Senior goalie Matthew LaMondia (East Longmeadow, Mass.) made five saves for the Saints, improving to 1-0-0 this season.
- Leopards junior goalie Robbie West (Weymouth, Mass.) was credited with four saves, but the loss drops him to 0-1-0.
