HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats set the tone for the contest early, scoring twice in the first 12 minutes of action to take control of the game with a 2-0 cushion. Gutekunst netted the first goal for his seventh of the season before sophomore forward JP Rioux (Stony Point, N.Y.) made it 2-0 at the 12:05 marker with his eighth score of the year.
- The Saints got one back in the 20th minute as junior back Thomas Roberts (Burlington, Mass.) played a left footed cross into the box to find the head of sophomore forward Kyle King (Gorham, Maine) for his fourth goal of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1.
- Emmanuel had a solid chance to even the match at 2-all but the shot by sophomore forward Robert Danielian (Watertown, Mass.) was stopped by JWU junior keeper Austin Scoggin (Cutchogue, N.Y.) in the 34th minute.
- Johnson & Wales took advantage of an Emmanuel miscue late in the half, as Gutekunst converted a penalty kick right before halftime following a Saints' handball in the box to give the visitors a 3-1 lead at the break.
- JWU added to the lead early in the second stanza to make it 4-1 as senior Riley Spotton (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) got into the action, hooking up with Gutekunst to make it a three-goal lead with 29:49 left in the contest.
- The Saints showed signs of life in the 75th minute as sophomore forward Kyle Monaghan (Monson, Mass.) was taken down in the penalty area and awarded a PK which he would convert for his second score of the year to cut the lead in half at 4-2.
- The two goal margin proved to be enough as the Wildcats managed the final 15 minutes of play to secure the 4-2 final.
