THE LEAD: Three second half goals including a pair scored on penalty kicks powered Emmanuel College past Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-1, Tuesday evening in non-conference men's soccer action at Roberto Clemente Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • The Leopards struck first only 7:36 into the contest when sophomore back Alex Moore (Salem, Conn.) played a long through-ball to senior Cameron Pacheco on the left side. Pacheco chipped a shot from outside the penalty area into the back of the net for his first goal of the campaign to put Wentworth on top, 1-0.
  • Despite outshooting WIT in the first half, 9-5, the Saints struggled to get quality chances and headed into the break trailing, 1-0.
  • After the intermission, the game's physicality picked up as both squads committed 10 fouls each in the second stanza.
  • During the 63rd minute of play, EC sophomore forward Robert Danielian (Watertown, Mass.) was able to beat the last Wentworth defender before he was dragged down in the box to draw a foul and penalty kick. Senior Nick Fierro (Katonah, N.Y.) buried the attempt to even the score a 1-1 and give the hosts new life.
  • Sophomore Alec Erskine (Coventry, Conn.) was also taken down in the WIT penalty area at the 77:25 marker to draw Emmanuel's second PK of the night and this time Erskine deposited second EC goal of the action, his team-best sixth of the year, to five Emmanuel the lead for good at 2-1.
  • EC threatened to make it 3-1 on a shot attempt off a diving header by sophomore midfielder Sean Allen (Oxford, Mass.) but WIT junior keeper Robbie West (Weymouth, Mass.) turned it away to keep in a one-goal game with 5:50 remaining in regulation.
  • On the ensuing corner kick, Erskine delivered a ball to the head of sophomore forward Kyle King (Gorham, Maine) who flicked home his first-goal of the campaign to seal the 3-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • The Saints held advantages in both shots (14-8) and corner kicks (4-1) in the victory.
  • Sophomore keeper Vincent Conelli (West Hartford, Conn.) played the second half in net for the Saints to pick up the victory and improve to 1-2 on the year, making one save.
  • West made five saves in defeat and falls to 3-3-2 on the yea for WIT.
  • The win marks the first in program-history for Emmanuel over their COF neighbors, snapping a five-game winless streak (0-4-1) dating back to 2014 when the teams first started to battle.

  • Both squads return to action this Saturday in conference action as the Saints travel to Weston, Mass. to face Regis College at 1:30 PM in GNAC play while Wentworth heads to Springfield, Mass. to go against Western New England University in CCC action at 2:00 PM.
