NIGHTHAWKS TAKE DOWN SAINTS IN HOME-OPENER, 2-0

THE LEAD: Led by the freshman attack of Rony Morales (Seekonk, Mass.) and Albert Baraka (Congo Bukavu, D.R.), the Newbury College Nighthawks scored in each half to down host Emmanuel College, 2-0, Wednesday night in non-conference action at Roberto Clemente Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

• Within the first ten minutes of play, both squads were able to attempt a shot on goal off of a corner kick, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
• The offense of both sides remained quiet until the Saints committed a foul that allowed Morales of the Nighthawks to score off of a penalty kick, 0-1, with eight minutes left in the half.
• Both teams continued to press offensively to close out the half with an offside penalty for each team, heading into half with Emmanuel down, 0-1.
• Coming out of break, the teams traded ten fouls in 18 minutes due to physical play, before Newbury's freshman Kobe Barnes (Hartford, Conn.) missed a great scoring opportunity hitting the post, keeping the game at 0-1.
• With 21 minutes remaining in the game, Emmanuel's freshman forward Kyle Monaghan received a red card on a breakaway ball to cause the Saints to go man-down for the remainder of the game.
• EC had a great chance to knot the score at 1-1 when freshman Robert Danielian (Watertown, Mass.) headed a shot towards the frame, beating the Nighthawks keeper only to connect squarely with the crossbar and bounce back into play to preserve the 1-0 lead for Newbury.
• Baraka connected off of a rebound originally shot by Morales to give the Nighthawks some breathing room with 18 minutes left of play, which proved to be enough despite the efforts of the Saints, 2-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

• The Nighthawks controlled most of the offense of the game, recording 13 shots, while the Saints only put five shot on goal.
• Junior goalkeeper Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) recorded six saves in his first loss of the year, while junior Samuel Quinones (San Diego, Calif.) recorded two saves in his first game of the season.
• With the evening's loss, the Saints still control the all-time record against the Nighthawks with a 4-8-2 record.

• The Saints will head on the road this Friday, September 7th to play non-conference opponent Bridgewater State University at 3:30 PM.
• Newbury will have their first game at home on Saturday, September 8^th when they host Salve Regina University at Hormel Stadium.
