WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Ryan Stokes (Fairport, NY) scored two second half goals and sophomore Matt Mulligan (Columbia, CT) notched a goal and an assist as the WPI men's soccer team blanked Emmanuel 4-0 in a non-conference match Wednesday night in Alumni Stadium.
Sophomore Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA) put the hosts on the board at 12:10 when he beat the goalkeeper with a shot to the bottom right. He received the ball from senior Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) and dribbled down the field en route to the tally. Late in the opening frame, Mulligan found the bottom left 90 following a feed from sophomore Liam Setterlund (Holden, MA) at 43:06.
Nearly seven minutes after the break, Stokes netted his first when he buried a rebound on a shot initially taken by junior Frank Ciliberto (Spencerport, NY). Stokes struck again just over 10 minutes later with help from Mulligan.
Four different Saints were credited with a shot, including one on-goal by sophomore William Burdick (Scarborough, ME). The 33 WPI shots were the most in nearly a year as the Engineers took 33 shots in a 6-0 win at Anna Maria on October 26.
Sophomore Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, MA) stopped eight shots and classmate Colin Paleologopoulos (South Hadley, MA) halted three as each took a half for the Saints. For the Engineers, senior Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) logged a save in the first half while senior Jordan Finzel (Northport, NY) was not called upon to make a stop in the second half.
The Crimson and Gray were awarded seven corners in the first half and the Saints were granted two in the second half.
The Engineers, who entered the United Soccer Coaches regional poll at No. 10, head into the noon NEWMAC regular season finale Saturday at Clark with a 12-4-1 record. The Saints move to 3-8-7 ahead of their 1pm GNAC quarterfinal on Sunday at Norwich. Earlier in the season, the Saints and Cadets played to a 0-0 draw.
