THE LEAD:  The University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team downed host Emmanuel College, 3-0, Monday evening in non-conference action at Roberto Clemente Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMass Boston opened the scoring with 33:03 to play in the opening stanza to take a 1-0 lead on junior midfielder Jake Higgins (Pembroke, Mass.) second goal of the year. Sophomore forward Raffi DeSouza (Watertown, Mass.) crossed a ball towards the back post and Higgins headed home the tally to give UMB the early cushion.
  • UMB dominated the first half possession, limiting the Saints to just one shot but the score remained 1-0 heading into the break.
  • The Beacons wasted little time to make it 2-0, scoring one minute into the second stanza on senior forward Gabriel Pereira's (Minas Gerais, Brazil) first goal on the campaign. Pereira was assisted by junior midfielder Erick Verdu (Hyde Park, Mass.) who fed the speedster from the left side before Pereira won the footrace to the ball for the tally.
  • Pereira added a second goal late in the game to account for the 3-0 final, finishing a feed from sophomore Junior Coca (Attleboro, Mass.).

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Beacons controlled the shot total, outshooting the Saints by a 19-2 margin, with neither shot by the hosts landing on frame.
  • Emmanuel held a slim edge in corner kicks (4-3) but was unable to capitalize on any of the set pieces.
  • UMB sophomore keeper Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) earned the shutout win to improve to 5-2-2 on the year
  • EC sophomore goalie Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) made seven saves before giving way to classmate Colin Paleologopoulos (South Hadley, Mass.) who made two saves in relief.
  • Emmanuel freshman Jack Bouchard (Portsmouth, N.H.), Mitch Libby (Scarborough, Maine) and Matteo Baldassare (Manhattan, N.Y.) made their collegiate debuts in the match.

WHAT'S NEXT?

  • The Saints return to action on Wednesday, October 18 when they head to Paxton, Mass. for a 4:00 PM Great Northeast Athletic Conference affair.
  • UMass Boston also plays on October 18, heading across the river to take on MIT at 7:00 PM in non-conference action.
