New Haven, Conn. – Junior forward Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team past visiting Emmanuel, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Celentano Field.
The Falcons (7-2-1, 2-1-1) ran their unbeaten streak to six games with the victory, while the Saints (3-6-2, 0-2-1) dropped their second straight conference tilt.
All three of the Albertus Magnus strikes came in the first half, as the hosts swarmed the guests out of the gates.
Senior midfielder Matt Mueller (Cheshire, Conn.) opened the scoring in the 19th minute of play with his third goal of the year. Freshman defender Anjel Dominguez (Wallingford, Conn.) played the ball to Mueller just outside the 18-yard box and he finished in the upper 90 past a diving attempt from Emmanuel freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.). The assist marked the first collegiate point for Dominguez.
Less than a minute later, senior midfielder Alex Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) sent Broderick into the offensive zone with a through ball and Broderick broke through for his team-leading fifth tally of the fall. The duo were not done there as they teamed for another goal in 31st minute to stretch the Albertus Magnus lead to 3-0. Broderick's second of the day was his sixth of the campaign and Zapata's helper was his second of the game and of the fall as well.
In the second half, Albertus Magnus maintained possession and kept the Saints attack at bay. The Falcon backline, anchored by sophomore goalkeeper Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.), did their job to maintain the clean sheet.
In net, Russo made eight saves to register his seventh win of the season. On the opposite side, Ferrarini turned aside four shots in a losing effort. The shutout was the third of the year and the first in conference play for Russo.
AMC is now 5-1-1 at home this fall. The game-winning goal was the first of the season for Mueller and the third of his career.
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Tuesday, October 4, with a road non-conference clash against in-state rival Coast Guard that is slated to get underway at 6:00 pm. Emmanuel returns to the pitch on Thursday, October 6 for a home contest against Lasell College in more GNAC action.
