BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College men's soccer team wasted a first half lead and settled for a 1-1 (2OT) draw against visiting Pine Manor College Thursday evening in non-conference action at Roberto Clemente Field. The Saints now stand at 3-5-2 on the year while the loss moves the Gators to 1-5-1 overall.
EC found the board during the 34th minute of action to take a 1-0 lead on senior Jordan Maurer's (Florence, Mass.) first goal of the season. The centerback took advantage of a deep throw in the box by senior defender Jeff Allen (South Windsor, Conn.) and found the back of the net with a well-placed header to give EC the halftime cushion.
Despite owning the lead at the break, the Saints were outshot by the Gators, 6-3 and Pine Manor also held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
The score remained 1-0 until the 80th minute of play when freshman Samuel Solano (El Paso, Texas) ripped a shot from 30 yards out that hit the upper right crossbar, deflecting back into the Emmanuel box. On the ensuing deflection, several players from both sides tried to play the ball and a foul in the penalty area was called on the Saints giving Pine Manor a penalty kick with 10:46 to play in regulation.
Junior Jahvar Gayle (Bloomfield, Conn.) buried the penalty with a low shot to the right side of the goal mouth to even the game at 1-1.
Both squads had good scoring chances in the first overtime session but were denied by the opposing goalkeeper and the game would ultimately end in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action.
The Saints outshot the Gators 18-14 while Pine Manor ended the evening with a 9-8 corner kick advantage.
EC freshman keeper Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) made three saves while PMC net minder Oscar Estrada (North Port, Fla.) stopped 11 shots for the visitors.
Emmanuel returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when they head to Albertus Magnus College for a 3:15 PM Great Northeast Athletic Conference battle while the Gators are back on Monday, Oct. 3 when they head to Colby-Sawyer College for a 4:00 PM tilt.
