BOSTON, Mass. - Emmanuel College freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) made six saves in a 2-0 victory over Newbury College on Saturday afternoon at Roberto Clemente Field.
The Saints saw senior Colin O'Donnell (Killingworth, Conn.) and freshman Justin Connor (Rochdale, Mass.) score on each side of the halftime break and cruised to their third win of the season.
Despite controlling much of the play in the first half, the Saints were outshot, 6-5, by the Nighthawks. Emmanuel earned four corners in the opening half, including one in the second minute of play.
It wasn't until the 44th minute that O'Donnell and the hosts broke through. Senior Wojciech Kopacz (Stalowa Wola, Poland) played a flawless ball into the penalty area and O'Donnell picked it out of the air with his head for his sixth goal of the season.
Emmanuel took the momentum into the break and came out firing early on in the second. Junior Cameron Messier (Belchertown, Mass.) pushed a ball to Connor who was set up 30 yards away from the goal in the center of the field. The freshman took one touch and drilled the ball to the far side of the goal to double the Saints lead.
The Nighthawks attempted seven more shots in the second half, but Ferrarini was only forced to make one save, as six other shots missed the target.
Newbury's Nilton De Andrade (Boston, Mass.) was issued a yellow card in the 84th minute of a game that included 18 fouls (nine a side).
O'Donnell attempted four shots and hit the target with each of them. Teammate Alex DeSaulnier (Wilbraham, Mass.) put two shots on goal and had multiple chances to add to the Saints lead throughout the game.
The Saints return home on Monday night as Worcester Polytechnic Institute visits Clemente Field for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m. The Nighthawks will travel to Medford, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Emerson at 7:00 p.m.
