BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College men's soccer team cruised to a 12-0 victory over Wheelock College Thursday evening in non-conference action at Roberto Clemente Field. The Saints improve to 2-1 on the year while the loss drops the Wildcats to 0-4 overall. EC set several new program records during the victory including goals scored (12) and 31 team points (12 goals, seven assists). Nine players scored in the win, a new single-game record with three players scoring multiple goals which was also a program-first.
The Saints controlled the action from start to finish, scoring nine first half goals to record another program milestone, surpassing the previous mark of seven goals in a half from a 9-0 win over Southern Vermont in 2004.
Senior forward Colin O'Donnell (Killingworth, Conn.) along with sophomores Alex DeSaulnier (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Henri Morrison (Great Barrington, R.I.) each scored two goals in the win. DeSaulnier added two assists for six points to become just the fifth player in program history to record six or more points in a contest. Morrison's goals came within two minutes of each other and were the first and second of his collegiate career while O'Donnell run's his season total to five goals in three games.
Junior Cameron Messier (Belchertown, Mass.) and sophomore Jason Miech (Coventry, R.I.) each added their first goals of the year while rookies Jack Barbour (Hollis, N.H.), Kyle Murphy (Madison, Conn.) and Dean Bates (Southampton, Mass.) found the back of the net for their first collegiate scores.
Rounding out the scoring column was senior Joe Russo (Malden, Mass.), who also tallied his first collegiate marker with 8:02 left in the action. The reserve keeper becomes just the fourth player in program history to score a goal during a season while also logging time in net and the first goalie at Emmanuel to score in a game in which he also logged time in net. Russo joins the ranks of Christian Percevecz '05, Mark Iannucci '08 and Jeremy Scanlon '13 as the only keepers to score goals during the same season they tended net, with Iannucci and Scanlon serving as field players that each only played one game in goal due to injuries suffered by the squad's main keeper during their campaign. Jesse Tannetta '11 also played goal and scored during his career with the Saints but his markers came later in his career during a season when he was no longer playing in net.
The shutout win was the second in a row for Emmanuel as freshman Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) notched the win and combined for the clean slate with Russo and freshman Colin Paleologopoulos (South Hadley, Mass.). Paleologopoulos stopped the only Wildcat shot on goal for his first collegiate save as Emmanuel outshot Wheelock 25-4 on the night.
Wheelock goalie Gard Broad (Shelton, Conn.) made six saves on the night while freshman Edwin Hernandez (Atlanta, Ga.) fired the lone shot on goal for the visitors.
Emmanuel returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when they open up Great Northeast Athletic Conference action against Norwich University at 3:00 PM.
