NASHUA, N.H. – Newcomer Kevin Herrera (Metapan, El Salvador) converted a 30-yard strike to the upper right corner off a Marcos Vieira Filho (Recife, Brazil) feed with 4:25 remaining in regulation delivering host Daniel Webster College a 2-1 victory over Emmanuel College Thursday afternoon in the season-opener for both clubs at Eagle Field.
Herrera's winner gave the Eagles (1-0) their first-ever program victory against the Saints (0-1) in six tries dating back to 2005. It was the second straight season-opening win for DWC, which is 3-0-1 in its last four season openers. Coming off a program best-ever 18-4 record last year, DWC also extended its regular season win streak to 15 and overall home win streak to 11.
The Eagles, who outshot the Saints 22-9 overall (10-3 on goal), forged ahead in the 28th as freshman Meshach Dunn (Dracut, Mass.) subbed in at the 26:56 mark and promptly followed 1:05 later burying a Matheus de Farias (Lowell, Mass.) feed from 15 yards out from the right side to the left corner for a 1-0 game.
Emmanuel drew a corner inside the final minute of the half and tied it with 39 seconds left as senior Colin O'Donnell (Killingworth, Conn.) headed home the Cameron Messier (Belchertown, Mass.) kick for a 1-1 game at the break.
DWC goalkeeper Cooper Hall (Heber City, Utah) picked up his first win of the season stopping a shot in each half. Emmanuel's Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) finished with eight stops with four in each half in his collegiate debut in net.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they visit Colby-Sawyer for an intrastate meeting at 1:00 p.m.
Emmanuel opens its home schedule on Saturday facing Emerson at 2:00 p.m. at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Mass.
