NASHUA, N.H. - A second half goal from senior Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, Vt.) knotted things up at 2-2 and that's how it finished as the Rivier University Men's Soccer team earned a point with a tie against Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Raider Field this evening.
Rivier slides to 1-11-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the conference while Emmanuel goes to 5-9-1, 4-3-1 GNAC.
Emmanuel got on the board early in the contest as Stefano Gambino set up David Field in the 14th minute. The Raiders would answer back in the 34th minute when junior Michael Russo (Lynn, Mass.) converted a pass from sophomore Alex Baker (Danvers, Mass.) for his second goal of the season.
With time winding down in the first half, Emmanuel was able to take the halftime lead when Jordan Maurer got one past Raider goalkeeper Anthony Capozzi (Windham, N.H.) at 43:07.
A few adjustments during the break had the Raiders controlling the pace early in the second half. Sophomore Harley Kearney (Pelham, N.H.) delivered a perfect pass to Soucie, who proceeded to net his second goal of the year and even the contest at 2.
Both teams would have opportunities to steal the win as the game went into double overtime but both goalkeepers stood tall.
Capozzi finished the evening with 18 saves and Emmanuel's James Withers recorded five saves.
Next up for Rivier will be a Saturday afternoon contest with Anna Maria College. The senior day GNAC contest will kick off at 3:30pm. Emmanuel will close out their regular season on Saturday as they host Suffolk in a 1pm start time. A win by the Saints and a tie or loss by Saint Joseph's College (ME) would give Emmanuel a first round home game in next week's GNAC Quarterfinals which would mark the program's first-ever home playoff game.
