BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer team was upended by Daniel Webster College on Wednesday night, falling 2-0 in a non-conference tilt at Roberto Clemente Field. The loss drops the Saints to 4-7 (3-1 GNAC), while Daniel Webster improves to 9-3 (3-0 NECC).
The Eagles got things started midway through the first half when freshman Joseano Tavares (Lawrence, Mass.) buried a rebound in the 22nd minute of play. Junior Marcos Vieira Filho (Recife, Penambuco, Brazil) took the initial shot that was turned away by Emmanuel senior goalkeeper James Withers (East Taunton, Mass.), but the Saints were unable to clear the box and Tavares cleaned it up for his fourth goal of the season.
Daniel Webster attempted five shots in the first half, putting two on goal, while the Saints took two shots and placed one on frame. There were nine fouls in the opening half, five going to the Saints and four to the Eagles.
The visitors doubled their lead early in the second half on a long-range missile from junior Ian Hutchinson (Litchfield, N.H.) that snuck under the crossbar above Withers' outstretched arms. Hutchinson took a feed from junior Eusebio Marote (Lowell, Mass.) and drilled a shot from beyond 25 yards for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Daniel Webster finished with nine shots on goal in the win, while the Saints only managed one attempt on frame. The Eagles earned four corners to Emmanuel's two and the Saints were whistled for 10 fouls, compared to DWC's 11.
Withers made seven saves in the losing effort and his record fell to 4-5 on the year. Eagles senior keeper Sean Hamilton (Brookline, N.H.) earned his eighth win of the year (8-2), making one save.
The Saints will remain at home for their next contest, a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) battle with Johnson & Wales University at 12:00 p.m. at Clemente Field. The Eagles will travel to Regis College on the same day for a New England Collegiate Conference affair with the Pride at 1:00 p.m.
