NEWTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College men's soccer team scored three second half goals in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference win over host Lasell College on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field. Emmanuel improves to 4-4 on the season and the Saints remained undefeated in GNAC action at 3-0 while the loss drops Lasell to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
EC seniors David Field (Laguna Niguel, Calf) and Stefano Sainato (Albany, N.Y.), and sophomore Jason Miech (Coventry, R.I.) each tallied goals for Emmanuel, and senior James Withers (East Taunton, Mass.) made three saves to earn the win in net for the Saints.
Lasell senior Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) made six saves in goal, and senior Nick Rudovic (Yonkers, N.Y.) paced the Lasers attack with a pair of shots on frame.
Lasell tested Withers in the early going, as Rudovic forced the senior keeper into a pair of saves in the opening 12 minutes of action. A shot from Lasell's Jonah Uribe (West Warwick, R.I.) sailed over the bar in the 12th minute before Emmanuel settled down and got a foot hold in the contest. A pair of Saints shots failed to find the target in the 17thminute of action and then Kurt Pruner (Rochester, N.Y.) forced Colmenares into his first save of the day in the 26th minute. Both teams failed to trouble each other over the final 20 minutes in the opening half, sending the contest to intermission knotted at 0-0.
Emmanuel put Lasell under the caution early in the second half, as Colmenares denied a pair of shots from Emmanuel in the 47th and 48th minute of play. Field tallied his second of the season in the 53rd minute of play, putting the visitors in front 1-0. The Saints continued to keep the pressure on Lasell, and Sainto netted the second goal of the match and his team-leading fifth of the season to give Emmanuel a 2-0 advantage. All five of his tallies have now come in GNAC conference action.
As Lasell began pushing forward in an attempt to find goal scoring chances, Emmanuel sprung a counter attack following a Laser corner and Miech made them pay with the Saints third goal en route to the 3-0 final score.
The 3-0 start in conference play for the Saints is the program's best-ever start in GNAC action. It marks only the second time in program-history that an Emmanuel squad has opened the conference slate without dropping a GNAC match during the first three tilts as the 2010 team opened their GNAC campaign with a 2-0-1 mark.
Emmanuel squares off against Emerson College on Wednesday September 30th at 6:00 p.m. in a non-conference road match, while Lasell returns to the pitch on Tuesday September 29th when they host Gordon College for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
