BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Emmett Dixon (Monrovia, Liberia) scored two goals including the game-winner in double-overtime to lift the Newbury College men's soccer team past Emmanuel College, 3-2 (2OT), Thursday evening in non-conference action at Roberto Clemente Field. The Nighthawks improve to 4-4 overall while the loss drops the Saints to 2-3 on the year.
With the score knotted at 2-2 at the end of regulation, the Nighthawks controlled much of the action during extra play by outshooting the Saints 5-0 in the overtimes. The visitors had a great chance to end the game in the first OT as junior midfielder German Canales (Lynn, Mass.) hit the crossbar from inside 10 yards to keep Emmanuel in the game.
Dixon would send everyone home with his second goal of the action at the 103:30 marker. The action started when junior forward Ethan Forrest (East Bridgewater, Mass.) ripped a shot on frame that EC senior keeper James Withers deflected out of bounds to make the save. On the ensuing corner kick taken by Canales, Dixon elevated high in the air to head home his team-leading sixth goal of the campaign to send Newbury home with the 3-2 win.
The Nighthawks lead early in the contest following a converted penalty kick by sophomore Kevin Teixeira (Boston, Mass.). After a questionable foul call at the very edge of the box, the striker deposited his second goal of the year to give Newbury a 1-0 lead just 10:41 into the game.
Emmanuel answered during the 28th minute when senior midfielder David Field (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) found junior forward Colin O'Donnell (Killingworth, Conn.) for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Field headed a ball deep in Nighthawk territory to O'Donnell who took one touch and drilled a low right-footed strike to the near post to even the score at 1-1.
The Saints continued to push and found the back of the net just before the first half's close to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman forward Alex DeSaulnier (Wilbraham, Mass.) deposited his first collegiate goal with just six seconds left in the half to give Emmanuel the one goal cushion heading into the break. Sophomore midfielder Jason Miech (Coventry, R.I.) played a ball on the right side of the pitch to a streaking DelSaulnier who powered his way through the final Newbury defender before beating rookie keeper Jarrod Smith (Watertown, N.Y.) to the near post for the score.
Dixon evened the score at 2-2 minutes into the second half to set the stage for his late game heroics. The senior scored the tying goal during the 48th minute with the help of an assist from freshman midfielder Mario Herrera (Casillas, Guatemala).
Newbury outshot Emmanuel 18-9 while the Saints held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Smith picked up the win in net making one save while Withers made five stops for Emmanuel.
The Saints return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 when they host Albertus Magnus College in GNAC action at 1:00 PM while the Nighthawks play next on Monday, Sept. 21 at 4:00 PM on the road at Curry College.
