BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT Men's Soccer team downed Emmanuel College, 4-0, Wednesday evening in non-conference action played at Roberto Clemente Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-5-4 with their regular season finale on Saturday at 1:00 PM vs. WPI. The Saints wrap the regular season with a 5-10-2 mark.
Following 35 minutes of scoreless action, MIT took control of the contest late in the opening half and never looked back. The Saints conceded a foul 35 yards out from their own net and the Engineers made them pay as junior midfielder Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) delivered a perfect ball into the box that junior Austin Freel (San Diego, Calif.) volleyed home for his second goal of the year to make it 1-0 at the 35:31 marker.
The duo would hook up again in the 42nd minute, this time with Bingham playing a through ball on the ground to Freel on the left side of the pitch. The junior would take two touches to goal before burying his second goal of the match to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
MIT wasted no time to add an insurance goal, scoring just 1:47 into the second half as Bingham netted his team-leading 12th goal of the year on an unassisted strike.
With the game in hand, MIT tacked on the final goal of the evening in the 64th minute as freshman midfielder Ryan Stuntz (Wellesley, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal to make it 4-0. The rookie's initial shot was stopped by EC senior goalkeeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) before Stuntz knocked home his own rebound.
MIT junior goalie Jake Amereno (Commack, N.Y.) stopped four shots to improve to 4-2-1 on the year. Charette posted five saves before giving way to sophomore Joe Russo (Saugus, Mass.) who in his collegiate debut stopped two shots in 18 minutes of action.
Prior to the start of the match, the Emmanuel College Athletic Department honored its two seniors, James Carroll (Guilford, Conn.) and Charette with a brief ceremony to recognize their careers with the Saints. The two have been a part of 29 career victories, the most by any graduating class in the program's 13-year history.
The Saints return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1:00 PM in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Quarterfinal match up against No. 3 seed Lasell College in Newton, Mass. During their regular season meeting, the Saints topped the Lasers, 1-0.
