SOMERVILLE, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Saints defeated the Suffolk University Men's Soccer team by a 3-0 score on Saturday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville. Senior James Carroll (Guilford, Conn.) scored a pair of second half goals to lead the Saints, who improve to a 5-6-2 overall record and a 4-3 mark in GNAC play on the year.
Emmanuel played the majority of the game down a man, following a red card in the twenty sixth minute of the contest for a flagrant foul. That did not slow down the visiting Saints, who managed to control the pace of play for the majority of the first half and would eventually get on the board in the closing minutes of the period.
Freshman Cameron Messier (Belchertown, Mass.) would strike for the game's first goal in the forty-third minute of the contest, when he was fed with a pass from sophomore Jeff Allen (South Windsor, Conn.) to give the Saints the lead heading into halftime. Messier's marker would eventually hold up as the game-winner.
Carroll would score his first of two goals on the evening in the sixty-fifth minute, when Allen collected his second helper of the evening to build it to a two goal edge for the Saints. Carroll would later cap off the victory, putting home his fourth goal of the season when junior David Field (Laguna Beach, Calif.) set him up for the strike.
Senior Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) made eight saves in goal for the Saints to pick up his fifth shutout of the season. Charette was also aided by his defense, as perhaps Suffolk's best scoring opportunity came in the fifty-third minute when senior Juan Lazcano Bello (Madrid, Spain) was put in front of a wide open net by freshman Juan Ucros (Guatemala, Guatemala) but the chance was stopped by an Emmanuel defender.
Charette now owns Emmanuel's all-time record for career shutouts, as Saturday evening's win marked the senior captain's 13th career shutout victory. The prior record of 12 career shutouts was held by Dan Campagna ('07).
Senior David Cook (San Diego, Calif.) led all players on the evening as he put four shots on goal to help pace Suffolk offensively. Suffolk held a 14-10 overall edge on shots in the game. The loss sets Suffolk back to 5-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in GNAC play.
Emmanuel will be back in action on Monday, when the Saints travel to Clark University in non-conference action beginning at 8:00 PM. Suffolk will host its regular season finale on Wednesday evening, as the Rams welcome Lasell College to Dilboy Stadium for an 8:00 PM GNAC contest.
