NEWTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College men's soccer team came out on top of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt on a rainy Alumni Field Saturday night by a final score of 1-0 against the Mustangs of Mount Ida College. With the win, Emmanuel improves to (3-5-2, 2-2 GNAC) while the Mustangs drop to (6-4, 2-2 GNAC).
The first half of action didn't see many scoring opportunities for either side with Mount Ida holding a 7-2 edge in shots. Emmanuel junior midfielder David Field (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) nearly put the Saints ahead in the opening 20 minutes of the game on a restart that hit the crossbar in favor of the Mustangs. The first half would come to a close with both teams battling the elements of heavy downpours.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Mount Ida saw a few opportunities to find the back of the net but were unable to do so. With about 20 minutes remaining in the GNAC contest, the tides changed and saw the Saints begin pressuring Mount Ida in their defensive third of the field. With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Stefano Sainato (Albany, N.Y.) found teammate James Carroll (Guilford, Conn.) on a cross from just outside the six yard box that Carroll buried by Mustang keeper Matt Pils (Monroe, Conn.)
The remaining two and a half minutes winded down with Emmanuel able to clear the ball out of trouble on their end of the field as time would eventually run out on the Mustangs, falling 1-0.
Mount Ida held a slight advantage in shots, 11-10, with just one of those being on target. Junior Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) led the way for Mount Ida with three shots. Pils made five saves in goal for the Mustangs while Saints keeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) made just one.
