BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College men's soccer team picked up their second win of the season over non-conference Emmanuel College, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon. Nighthawk senior midfielder Rodriguez Pierre(Somerville, Mass.) netted the game-winner for the hosts 15-minutes into the first period to improve to 2-7-1 as a team.
A highly contested defensive battle throughout, the Nighthawks were able to get on the board early in the first half for the first and only score of the match. From mid-field, sophomore forward Ethan Forrest (East Bridgewater, Mass.) put the ball into the box, when misplayed by an Emmanuel defender it found Pierre's foot and the back of the net.
The Saints came out strong in the second half forcing five corner kicks in the period, but were unable to capitalize. Emmanuel's senior forward James Carroll (Guilford, Conn.) created multiple scoring opportunites for the Saints with three shots on goal, but was denied by Nighthawk junior goalkeeper Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.) all three times. Tran was perfect in the net stopping all seven shots on goal he faced and earning his first shutout of the season.
Newbury improves to 2-7-1 with the win while Emmanuel drops to 2-3-2. The Nighthawks return to action on Thursday, September 25 when they face off against non-conference Pine Manor College at 3:30 p.m. in Brookline.
