MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO JWU IN GNAC OPENER, 5-0
Providence, R.I – Senior Kyle Metz (St. James, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team to an impressive 5-0 shutout victory against Emmanuel in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Providence, R.I – Senior Kyle Metz (St. James, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team to an impressive 5-0 shutout victory against Emmanuel in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
JWU opened the scoring for the day when senior Dustin Hughes (Holden, Mass.) sent a through ball to fellow senior O'Kyle Corridon (Selden, N.Y.) who put a shot into the bottom corner of the net at the 13:41 mark for the 1-0 advantage. Johnson & Wales had a commanding 14-2 advantage in shots on goal for the half and took the one goal lead heading into intermission.
The Wildcats upped their lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute when Metz scored his first goal of the day with an assist to Corridon. JWU continued to control the action and made the score 3-0 after junior Drew Lightfoot (Philadelphia, Pa.) put in a crossing pass from senior Doug Kase (Elmwood Park, N.J.) at the 75:56 mark. Metz's second goal of the day came on a breakaway in the 82nd minute to give the Wildcats the 4-0 advantage and JWU capped off the scoring for the day with just over :20 left in the game on an unassisted goal by sophomore Xavier Carty (Mt. Vernon, M.Y.) en route to the 5-0 victory.
Senior Ryan Dzierzawski (Oakland, Mich.) notched three saves in goal for JWU while senior Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) tallied six saves in the loss for Emmanuel.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 2-2-1 on the year and 1-0-0 in the GNAC while Emmanuel drops to to 1-2-2 for the season and 0-1-0 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, September 17th when they host Elms in a non-conference contest at 4:00 p.m while the Saints are idle until Saturday, September 20 when they host Rivier University at 1:00 PM.
