BOSTON, Mass. – Three second half goals powered Emmanuel College past Clark University, 3-1, Wednesday evening in non-conference men's soccer action at Roberto Clemente Field. With the victory, the Saints improve to 7-9 on the year while the loss drops the Cougars to 3-9-2 overall.
After 34 minutes of scoreless action, Clark got on the board first when freshman forward Tim Rovank (Portland, Maine) drilled a shot into the top third of the net, burying a feed from senior defender Kenneth Vera (Franklin Square, N.Y.) to put the visitors on top, 1-0.
The Cougars carried the one-goal lead into halftime outshooting the hosts 6-5 in the opening frame but Emmanuel would turn things around in half two, scoring three times to record their third come-from-behind victory of the year.
Senior midfielder Danny Richman (Medfield, Mass.) got the comeback started with his third goal of the year at the 51:25 marker. Following a nice transition play by the Saints that saw two shots on goal, a Clark defender tried to clear the second rebound only to put the ball at Richman's feet 25 yards out right in front of the box. The senior connected with a left-footed shot that tucked just under the crossbar to even the match at 1-1.
Just over two minutes later, EC would take the lead for good as freshman forward Jordan Maurer (Florence, Mass.) played a perfect through ball to the feet of sophomore midfielder David Field (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Field timed his run perfectly to find himself one-on-one with Clark senior goalkeeper Alfonso Alvarez (San Salvador, El Salvador) before depositing his third goal of the 2013 campaign to the lower right side of the net to make it 2-1.
In the 82nd minute of play, the Saints would add an insurance goal to put the game out of reach as senior forward Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) provided a bending ball off a cornerkick into the Cougar's six-yard box. Junior forward James Carroll (Guilford, Conn.) ran on and headed the ball into the back of the net to account for the 3-1 final and the Saints second win in as match matches.
Sophomore keeper James Withers (East Taunton, Mass.) earned the win for Emmanuel making three saves on the night while Alvarez finished with eight saves.
This marks just the second time the two program's have met and evens the series at 1-1 as the Cougars came away with a 2-1 victory last year.
Emmanuel returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they head to Newton, Mass for a 2:00 PM contest against Lasell College while Clark heads to Cambridge, Mass. to face MIT at 1:00 PM.
