BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Kyle Shangraw (Westbrook, Maine) tallied a hat trick to lead the Saint Joseph's College (ME) pas the Emmanuel College men's soccer team, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Clemente Field. With the victory, the Monks stay perfect in the GNAC improving to 5-0 with a 9-4-1 overall mark while the loss drops the Saints to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in GNAC play.
Shangraw opened the scoring with his 10th marker of the season 19:59 into the game on an unassisted game. The forward was able to dribble through the Saint back line and squeak a ball through the legs of junior goalkeeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) to make it 1-0.
Saint Joseph's made it a 2-0 game at the 28:24 marker when freshman Victor Santos (Framingham, Mass.) was the beneficiary of a few quick passes by Shangraw and senior Zach Johnson (Westbrook, Maine.). Shangraw fed Johnson on the left side of the box before Johnson one-touched a pass to Santos who immediately buried the ball in the back of the EC net to give the visitors the two-goal cushion.
The game would remain at 2-0 until the 65th minute of play when Shangraw made it 3-0 with his 11th goal of the campaign. Senior midfielder Garrett Darnell (Gray, Maine) played a ball inside the Emmanuel box and Shangraw did the rest.
Emmanuel found the scoring column shortly after to cut the lead to 3-1 when sophomore midfielder Cian O'Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) volleyed home a throw-in from freshman defender Jeff Allen (South Windsor, Conn.) with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Shangraw added some insurance with his third tally of the game less than a minute later when he converted a penalty kick to make it 4-1.
The Saints would net a late goal on a corner kick as senior forward Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) found the back of the net, directly off of the corner for his second score of the year but it was too little too late for the hosts as Saint Joseph's held on for the 4-2 victory.
Sophomore Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) earned the win in net, making a pair of saves for the Monks while Charette finished the afternoon with six stops for EC.
Emmanuel returns to action on Monday when they head to Anna Maria for a 5:30 PM GNAC match up while the Monks play host to Rivier the same day at 2:30 PM.
